The purpose of this LDSI is for Wayne-Westland Community Schools to request $250,000 in funding to continue and expand access to its highly impactful Driver Education Program for students who face financial and academic barriers. This program is designed to serve students who qualify for free or reduced lunch and meet at least one of the State of Michigan’s 31A “at-risk” criteria, ensuring support is directed to those with the greatest need. To promote responsibility and reinforce positive school engagement, students must also meet an attendance requirement of no more than five unexcused absences per semester. The program has demonstrated strong success and demand across our district. With previous state funding in 2024, Wayne-Westland Community Schools successfully provided driver education to 465 students, removing a significant financial barrier for families. The cost of driver education, exceeding $500 per student, is prohibitive for many in our community. As a result, some families delay enrollment until their child turns 18 to avoid these costs, leading to an increasing number of young drivers operating vehicles without formal driver education training. This funding will allow the district to continue offering equitable access to driver education, improve road safety, and support student independence and postsecondary readiness. Expanding this program directly aligns with the State’s commitment to student safety, equity, and opportunity. Investing in this initiative ensures that all students, regardless of income, have the knowledge, skills, and preparation to become safe, responsible drivers.
