6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?

The purpose of this LDSI for Wayne-Westland Community Schools is to provide $160,000 in state funding to sustain and expand their highly successful Elementary Athletic Program, an initiative designed to address significant gaps in access to youth recreation across the community. Launched in 2021, this program was created in response to the loss of local recreational infrastructure and the rising cost of youth sports, which has left many families unable to participate. Today, the community faces a “recreation desert,” where affordable, structured opportunities for students are extremely limited. Despite these challenges, the program has rapidly grown and now serves over 1,600 students annually, with thousands of family members engaged each weekend. It provides opportunities in flag football, basketball, cheer, soccer, and T-ball, with a planned expansion into additional opportunities for students across grades K-3.
