6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?

Wayne State University College of Nursing is seeking a state investment to increase the number of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) to expand access to mental health services and provide care in underserved communities throughout Michigan. Funding would provide direct financial support to newly enrolled students in the colleges Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program who are committed to advancing their education beyond their undergraduate nursing education and licensure as a registered nurse, addressing challenges related to the mental health provider shortage, and staying in Michigan. The funding would allow the WSU College of Nursing to support the training of an additional 9 Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners over the next year. Each new Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner would receive a stipend and, in return, be required to work in a state- or federally designated underserved community in Michigan to improve access to mental health services for a minimum of 2 years upon completion of the program.
