- 6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
- United Way and subcontractors will use this appropriation to support residents of Genesee County and nearby areas, including Shiawassee, Saginaw, and Bay counties, by providing: Enrollment assistance for healthcare coverage programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, and MiChild. Support to maintain healthcare and food assistance, including help with semi-annual redeterminations, completing work requirement forms, or applying for exemptions when appropriate. Medical home connectivity, including access to PCP, specialists, prescriptions, dental, and home care. Support health system navigation. Addressing high, inappropriate, and preventable emergency department use as well as HEDIS measures (i.e., immunizations, well child visits, body mass index & nutrition education). Referrals to essential services—such as job training, housing, utility assistance, transportation, childcare, alcohol/substance abuse treatment, and other social determinants of health resources—designed to help residents move out of poverty. Education and training for other safety-net organizations to better assist residents in accessing these services. These efforts will help keep residents insured, support their medical home connectivity and participation in preventative health behaviors, and provide the resources needed to improve economic stability and overall well-being.
