- The Anton Art Center is dedicated to providing exceptional arts programming and services to our community. Our elevator, an essential part of ensuring access to our classrooms, galleries, office, and programs, has reached a point where it can no longer be reliably repaired and must be replaced. This creates a significant accessibility challenge and may impact some visitors’ ability to fully experience the Art Center. Accessibility is not optional, it is central to our mission and values. The Art Center, housed in a historic Carnegie Library building, is designated as a Michigan Historic Site and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021. A 2005 addition included the installation of an elevator, allowing the Art Center to make the historic building fully accessible for the first time. Because the Art Center does not have a zero-step entry, access to all galleries, classrooms, and program spaces depends on either stairs or the elevator. Completion of this project will restore full access to The Art Center’s galleries and instructional spaces, ensuring that all visitors, regardless of age or mobility, can participate fully in exhibitions, classes, and programming. By removing a critical barrier to access, the elevator replacement will directly enhance the quality, inclusivity, and reach of artistic and cultural experiences at the Anton Art Center.
