- 5. Requested amount of the legislatively directed spending item:
- $500,000.00
- 6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
- The current water rescue capability relies on an inflatable boat with a 25hp motor, which is effective for inshore and flood situations but requires approximately 10 minutes to deploy, limiting timely response along the six miles of shoreline. Its slow speed, limited capacity of two seated patients, full exposure to the elements, and inability to support nighttime operations further constrain effectiveness. Additionally, with the Coast Guard only part-time and the nearest support over 20 minutes away, response gaps remain. Funding would enable acquisition of a larger, ready-to-deploy vessel that reduces response times, accommodates multiple patients, and supports fire suppression and water supply in areas with limited access, such as canal streets and marinas. Enhanced capabilities, including all-weather and nighttime operations with a cabin and infrared camera, would also support future expansion to a dive team, provide on-site operator training, and serve as a shared regional asset through mutual aid.
