6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
The purpose of the restroom project is to provide safe, accessible, and year-round facilities that enable the Selfridge Military Air Museum (SMAM) to expand public access and programming. Current restroom options are inadequate, not ADA-compliant, and unusable during winter months, limiting visitation and excluding individuals with disabilities. Upgrading to a climate-controlled, ADA-compliant facility will remove these barriers and allow the museum to operate year-round, significantly increasing public access to its exhibits and programs. This investment strengthens a long-standing public institution that delivers clear community, educational, and economic benefits. For over 50 years, SMAM has preserved Michigan’s aviation and military history, including the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, while serving as a gathering place for veterans, service members, and their families. By improving accessibility and expanding operations, the project enhances tourism, supports STEAM education, and ensures that future generations can engage with and learn from this important cultural resource.
