- Mosaic Counseling, a nonprofit organization founded in 1978, has received funding through five budget cycles within the DHHS budget and once through LEO, most recently in 2025 with an award of $500,000. Over the years, Mosaic has transformed the delivery of mental health services in Michigan. Currently, Mosaic serves the mild to moderate mental health needs of individuals in Kent and Ottawa Counties by providing accessible, affordable professional counseling. The organization connects people to personalized support during their time of need - regardless of insurance or financial status - and amongst a panel of over 300 therapists. Mosaic’s current services focus on four main areas: 1. Outpatient Counseling – utilizing a unique intake and pairing process, the service that would receive state funding through expansion funding. 2. Employee Assistance Programs, 3. School Outreach Programs, and 4. Suicide Prevention Training. Depending on an individual's financial situation, the cost of care can be reduced to as little as $6 - or even covered through community service. By addressing mild to moderate mental health needs, Mosaic helps remove barriers to professional counseling and reduces the financial strain on the state by preventing the need for more intensive, costly treatment for severe and persistent psychological disorders. Following years of successful budget support, growth, and outreach efforts in Lansing, Mosaic has gained recognition among lawmakers and committees. Its innovative model, proven effectiveness, and commitment to professional care have made a lasting impression - especially for those often turned away by other healthcare providers and community health centers. There is growing interest and demand to expand Mosaic’s services to other parts of the state. Its replicable and fiscally responsible model is seen as a critical tool in addressing the mental health needs of Michigan’s "missing middle" - those who fall through the cracks of traditional care systems. Expanding Mosaic's counseling services would play a vital role in improving mental health outcomes across the state through affordable and accessible care. The organization’s continued growth and increasing demand for services have also outpaced the capacity of their current physical headquarters, limiting available private therapy spaces and administrative support needed to efficiently match clients with clinicians and expand into underserved areas. Part of the funding would additionally support a larger, well-equipped headquarters that would enable Mosaic Counseling to increase client access, support more staff, and better serve the mental health needs of Michigan residents, particularly youth and vulnerable populations, thereby maximizing the impact of state investment in community well-being.
