- Across Michigan and the nation, policymakers increasingly recognize that postsecondary success is inseparable from basic life stability. National data show that a significant share of community college students experience housing insecurity at some point during their enrollment, with single parents among the most affected. These students are not failing academically; they are navigating fragile systems where one disruption, such as an eviction, a childcare breakdown, or a medical expense can derail education entirely. For Michigan, this challenge carries real economic consequences. When students stop out due to housing instability, the state loses potential credential completers, employers lose talent, and families remain economically vulnerable. Addressing housing stability is therefore not a social service add-on; it is a workforce and competitiveness strategy for the state. Jet’s Village at Jackson College directly addresses this reality. It provides safe, affordable, on-campus, independent, tiny-home housing for single-parent students within a comprehensive, intentionally designed support ecosystem. Residents live steps away from childcare services, campus dining, a mental health clinic, a Henry Ford Health medical clinic, campus safety, tutoring and academic support centers, student success navigators, campus employment opportunities, and a peer learning community. This proximity removes barriers to education and allows non-traditional students an opportunity to increase their skills while providing a stable environment for their children. Jackson College currently operates six tiny homes, all of which are fully occupied with a persistent waitlist. Demand far exceeds supply, meaning qualified, motivated students are turned away not because they lack ability, but because the College lacks capacity. Early outcomes demonstrate improved persistence and completion among residents. For some students, Jet’s Village represents their first experience with independent living in a supportive environment, creating a bridge to long-term housing and economic stability after graduation. The ability for students to remain while completing bachelor’s degrees through on-campus partners further amplifies the return on investment. This FY 2027 request expands Jet’s Village by fourteen additional units, bringing the total to twenty homes, increasing the number of students Jackson College can serve, expanding opportunities for education for students, and possibilities for workforce development for the State of Michigan.
