- In response to longstanding behavioral health access gaps across Genesee County, Insight Research Institute launched the Insight Behavioral Health Foundation (IBHF) as a nonprofit extension dedicated to expanding mental and behavioral healthcare capacity. The foundation delivers a full continuum of services, including therapy, counseling, psychotherapy, psychiatric evaluation, and medication management through in-person visits, telehealth, and phone-based care. This multi-modal approach is designed to eliminate common barriers such as transportation challenges, provider shortages, and scheduling limitations. The service model reflects evidence-based access strategies demonstrating that hybrid delivery systems improve treatment engagement and continuity, particularly in communities facing provider scarcity and socioeconomic obstacles. Located on the Insight Flint campus, the organization officially opened 19 medical psychiatric beds in December 2025 to address the growing need for integrated behavioral health services. Since opening, the unit has recorded 68 patients with an average daily census of 7 patients, reflecting sustained demand for dual medical-psychiatric stabilization. These specialized beds are designed to serve individuals who require both psychiatric stabilization and concurrent medical treatment, an increasingly critical need given the high prevalence of chronic illness and behavioral health conditions in the region. Insight Behavioral Health's interdisciplinary, patient-centered approach ensures that individuals in crisis receive comprehensive care in a medically supervised setting, with a focus on stabilization, continuity, and long-term recovery. To meet continued demand, Insight Behavioral Health is requesting $3 million in state capital funding to support the next phase of its behavioral health expansion, which includes the addition of 30 new medical psychiatric beds. This initiative will further strengthen the region's behavioral health infrastructure and expand access for residents facing complex co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions. The renovated space will not only increase inpatient capacity but will also create new jobs in psychiatry, nursing, social work, behavioral health support, and related clinical services. By increasing access to integrated care, reducing pressure on local emergency departments, and providing patients with a coordinated pathway to recovery, this project will deliver measurable public benefit. The investment supports statewide behavioral health priorities and does not violate Article IV, Section 30 of the Michigan Constitution, as it advances essential healthcare services through a nonprofit institution serving a high-need population.
