Faced with the reality that 75% of adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) receive their caregiver support from their aging parents, Independent Living Alliance (ILA) took decisive action. In 2019, we created ILA — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building a world-class, safe, supportive, and intentional community for adults with I/DD. This community will combine inclusive housing with life-skills programming, vocational opportunities, and supportive services that help residents lead full, independent, and connected lives. We have partnered with Special Olympics of MI to ensure our residents maintain a health and wellness focus and have an opportunity to participate in Special Olympics sports. ILA has also established a partnership with Canton Township’s Therapeutic Recreation department to provide programming and life skill activities for our residents and the greater I/DD community.
