- 6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
- Genesee Intermediate School District would serve as the fiduciary for this project. The purpose of this legislatively directed spending item is to expand high-quality, hands-on STEM and enrichment learning opportunities for students in Bentley and Flint by redeveloping currently vacant facilities into innovative, flexible learning spaces located near neighborhood schools. The investment of $2 million for Bentley Schools and $1 million for the Flint Center for Educational Excellence will create approximately 6,000 square feet of new learning space in Bentley and approximately 7,500 square feet in Flint that support extended-day STEM instruction, enhanced hands-on learning during the school day, and robust afterschool and summer programming. This is an appropriate use of taxpayer money because it maximizes the use of vacant, existing properties rather than constructing new buildings, improves educational outcomes and workforce readiness in high-need communities, and increases access to safe, supervised, academically focused out-of-school time options that benefit students, families, and the broader public.
