- 6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
- The club’s mission is to empower at-risk boys and girls, ages 5 through 24, by providing access to diverse sports programs and academic support that develops both healthy minds and bodies, while providing support & creating opportunities with their families. DCL is committed to celebrating every child’s voice and helping them recognize their value through opportunities that build confidence, discipline, and community. This year, DCL is celebrating its 7-year anniversary and as such, they have announced the initiative to expand services into the East side of Detroit and all the way through the Macomb County area via a partnership with Warren Lincoln school system. To date, DCL has served a total of 15,467 youth. DCL already serves 5,000 youth through a variety of programs and initiatives on the West Side of Detroit. With this partnership and their goal of serving another 5,000 youth, it will bring their total to 10,000 youth served for the year. DCL is has also expanded their work through a variety of additional programming such as: Traditional & non-traditional sports: Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, cheer, dance, swimming, gymnastics, e-sports, lacrosse, volleyball, chess, golf Academic & life skills support: Tutoring, mentoring, STEM/STEAM, robotics, conflict resolution, leadership development, financial literacy, culinary arts, media, communications, journalism, podcasting/content creation Career readiness: Workforce development and youth employment This year, the DCL team is also launching a new program to not only help youth gain access and training to skilled trades that will help them in the future, but they are looking to help whole families with the launching of the Lion’s Den Training Program: workforce training in multiple skilled trade areas, such as tree trimming, EV installation, FANUC robotics, culinary arts, cyber security, hospitality & customer service, graphic design, screen printing, and more. With programs like those DCL provide, families receive many diverse opportunities to achieve access to and to obtain stackable credentials while ultimately securing job placement. By supporting the entire household, it will give them the confidence needed to persevere through any challenges they may have, or face in the future.
