- The Fire Department recently sold its ladder truck, a 2000 Pierce Aerial Truck, which has exceeded its expected service life. Industry standards typically place ladder trucks at a 15–20-year life span, and this apparatus is now 26 years old. Due to its age and escalating mechanical and safety issues, the truck requires extensive repairs to remain operational. They have received an offer of $100,000 from an out-of-state fire department, which we believe represents a responsible opportunity to divest the unit and avoid further costs and liability. In addition, the department is sending its only backup fire engine to auction after it failed a DOT inspection and was found to require over $100,000 in repairs to return it to service. Once these actions are completed, the Township will be operating with only two engines to serve the entire community. They are currently evaluating options for the purchase of a new, smaller, and more versatile ladder truck that could serve both as a ladder apparatus and as a backup engine, significantly improving flexibility and resilience while better aligning with modern operational needs. The department provides automatic mutual aid with the City of Trenton, and the availability of a reliable ladder truck is a critical component of that partnership. Ensuring that the department maintains a modern, dependable ladder truck directly enhances the level of service and life safety protection available to Trenton residents when mutual aid is required. Securing this funding would not only strengthen fire protection within Brownstown Township but also reinforce regional emergency response capabilities through the established Downriver mutual aid agreements. State funding or financing assistance represents the most sustainable solution, allowing BFD to maintain adequate fire protection, responsibly manage taxpayer resources, and ensure the safety of both our residents and firefighters.
