- Canton Township is seeking $3 million toward a $5 million remediation and redevelopment initiative at the former municipally owned Munn Dump – a 50+ acre site located along the Amtrak rail corridor south of Michigan Avenue. With environmental assessments now complete, the Township is positioned to move immediately into remediation and site preparation. This project is not simply a cleanup; it is a strategic opportunity to transform long-idle public land into a transit-oriented development that strengthens the Detroit–Ann Arbor innovation corridor. The site’s advantages are rare. It is publicly controlled, free of private litigation risk, and directly adjacent to rail infrastructure in one of Southeast Michigan’s most important economic corridors. Large, contiguous parcels with rail access and no acquisition barriers are increasingly uncommon. Once remediated, this property will be transit-ready from day one – uniquely positioned to support commuter rail, micro-transit integration, park-and-ride facilities, and mixed-use development. The redevelopment will deliver measurable regional returns. It eliminates environmental risk and protects groundwater, removes blight from a key corridor, and unlocks significant private-sector investment potential. Over time, the project will expand the tax base, create construction and permanent jobs, and establish a central mobility node connecting Detroit, Canton, and Ann Arbor. This is infrastructure that supports both economic growth and regional connectivity. Canton is seeking local, state and federal partnerships to convert this environmental liability into a generational asset. With state support, this 50-acre site can anchor future transit expansion, catalyze innovation-focused development, and strengthen long-term regional mobility. Together, we can position this corridor for sustained economic impact and visible public return on investment.
