6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
Michigan’s 1.7 million caregivers are the backbone of our long-term care system—providing unpaid support that saves billions in public spending. We depend on unpaid caregivers to meet home and community-based needs of our growing aging population. Yet these caregivers face many challenges, and without stronger support, the system they sustain is at risk. The Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan requests a $5 million appropriation to expand AAA caregiver support programs, providing respite, and education, to sustain the unpaid workforce that underpins Michigan’s long-term care system.
